Have you ever had the opportunity to see an artist at work? You’ve probably been mesmerized as you watch them exact their craft. Whether they craft with brush strokes, with their hands or with tools; it’s often hypnotizing to watch the artist meticulously create their art. Craftsmanship is built upon time-tested techniques, honed by study and experience and mastered through unwavering commitment to the craft’s history and through reverence to its authentic evolution. At the Porch Company, we are dedicated to the craft of building authentic, custom, hand-built doors using the European woodworking tradition, adding a bit of modern styling.
At the Porch Company, our doors are thicker than most standard porch doors, use more appropriate wood than most big-box wood doors and include attention to details not commonly found such as beveling to shed water. Is this overengineered? We don’t think so. Everything we do, we build with the diligence of a craftsman and the spirit of an artist. We do not generate multiple designs simply to create options. We evaluate the need and design the solution the way we would if we were working in our own homes. “Art is not a thing, it is a way.” ~Elbert Hubbard. Architectural integrity is not a conscious choice, it’s a belief system.
That being said, we want to introduce you to the porch doors we design and sell online through our Porch Store.
Our doors are hand constructed using Old World joinery. Our goal is that your porch door not only functions exceptionally well but that it’s still functioning that well and looking “that” great over the course of many years. With this joinery, 8-12 domino-sized splines are used to hold the various components of the door together. You’ll never see the splines but you also will not see sections of the door begin to come apart. In contrast, other wooden doors may utilize screws or bolts to hold the component pieces together. The weight of the door often causes those less substantial connections to fail over time.
The dimensions of our doors are important. They look, feel and are substantial. Whereas big box doors are generally 1″ thick, we build our doors at 1 3/4″ thick. We want the doors to have heft, mass and dimension. We want them to feel like a real door and function like a great door over the long term. There are a number of different wood options. We have always used cypress because we feel it offers the best quality for the price.
Details. Details. Details. We don’t want your door to come apart. We don’t want it to sag. We don’t want a thin door to clap as it closes. We are also passionate about preventing water from pooling on and horizontal components. Water that sits on wood will eventually cause rot. Our horizontal edges are beveled at 15 degrees to make sure water doesn’t pool.
Your house. Your porch. Your door. While we certainly have a number of classic and time-tested designs, we also custom design doors. If you need a door that’s taller, wider or has custom shaping, we will build that for you. We love building tall doors at 7 feet or greater. In order to ensure the same architectural integrity on taller doors, we oppose the grains on the 2 layers of the doors going to extraordinary lengths to build the best and longest lasting doors.
We make it easy to make it your own. Not only are custom shapes and sizes available, we ship your doors unfinished allowing you to paint, stain or enjoy your door unfinished.
