Renew, refresh, revitalize! No, it’s not the latest spa treatment, it was the homeowners’ goal when they replaced their Brentwood, TN, screened porch. They wanted a new design, inside and out, so they called on The Porch Company to make it happen. The results? Stunning… yes… inside and out.
The simple elegance of this screened porch exterior says so much! It’s understated, yet precise. As you can see from the before-and-after photos, we designed a porch about twice the size of the original. In evaluating their porch needs, the homeowners realized they enjoyed using their screened porch more than the adjacent open deck. With that preference established, they were willing to sacrifice the deck to gain a bigger screened porch.
Even without the open deck area, the homeowners retained a space for sitting in the sun. The new landing at the top of the stairs may look small compared to the size of the porch, but it holds two nice-size chairs. It’s the perfect outdoor conversation nook. With two sturdy chairs on the landing, plenty of room remains for folks to walk by and access the screened porch from outside.
To create the new, larger screened porch, we were able to use the existing brick piers. We redid the walls and added a shed roof over the deck area that was previously uncovered. Gone is the dark painted wood railing of yesteryear. The new railing system is white with bronze-colored aluminum spindles. We used low maintenance post caps and sleeves on the railing posts along the stairs and on the landing. These dress up the exterior of the porch quite a bit.
Our design for the porch exterior included all-white trim to match that of the home. We recommend painting your porch exterior the same color as your home’s trim. We try to counsel homeowners on this because it looks more natural to the existing home—not added on. People assume a porch should look like a deck, but we advise against using dark exterior stains that don’t match the house. The bottom line is the porch should look like the house, not an appendage.
We dressed up the porch’s interior by reboxing the columns to make bigger columns with crown molding. With new walls, new railings, and the addition of an exquisite stone wood-burning fireplace, the original screened porch has been transformed. Exactly what the homeowners wanted: renewed, refreshed, revitalized! The fireplace features a beautiful circle sawn mantel from porchco.com. The flooring is cypress, our favorite. The original porch floor was not sloped, so we had to add sleepers to get a slope on the floor.
The homeowners use the section of the porch that’s covered by the new shed roof as a dining room. We love the ceiling in this area with its exposed beams in white—a stunning contrast against the ceiling’s stained wood.
With lots of contemporary touches in the décor, the new porch exudes just the right mix of comfort and elegance. Did you notice the clients have one of The Porch Company’s signature swing beds? We sell them online, and we can ship to you!
You may have also noticed heaters installed close to the ceiling. Each half of the porch has two of them. These are the Solaira infrared heaters that we recommend to our clients for heating screened porches. While outdoor fireplaces give your porch a cozy ambiance, they cannot keep an outdoor room warm. With Solaira’s infrared technology, everyone on your screened porch can stay comfortably warm even when there’s a chill in the air.
