Around here, the only thing better than having a porch is having two of them. These Forest Hills homeowners took that theory to the next level by asking The Porch Company to design double-decker porches. On the home’s second story, the new screened porch overlooks the serene blue pool. Below, an open porch provides swimmers with a shady respite from the sun. Adults keeping an eye on little ones frolicking in the pool have a fan-cooled outdoor room furnished with cushioned chairs.
The second-story screened porch provides the perfect setting for everything from morning coffee to nighttime movies with popcorn. At no time are pesky flying insects invited up here! This screened porch is a spacious 15’ x 20’ room, ample space for a comfortable living room arrangement. While our porch designs often include space for separate living and dining areas, at least 16’ x 20’ is recommended for the dual functions. These Forest Hills homeowners preferred a single-function porch.
You’re sure to notice our PorchCo Southern Cross railing panels along the bottom of the screens on this porch. These railings play off the existing similar panels in the home’s second-story bump-out area. Continuing that element from the existing design to the new makes the porch look original to the home.
The inside of this screened porch design features boxed columns, cypress flooring, and an exposed-rafter ceiling. Along with a beautiful gas-burning fireplace! We built the chimney with manufactured stacked stone. As you can see, the chimney extends through both porch levels, because each level has a fireplace. We used our fabulous circle sawn mantels over both fireplaces to hide the wires for the clients’ TVs and electronics.
Another standout feature of this screened porch is our use of Solaira infrared heaters for extended enjoyment. When the weather turns chilly, the homeowners will not need to bundle up under blankets to stay warm out here. Instead, the infrared heaters send out waves of warmth for the porch occupants. Our clients will be able to enjoy this screened porch throughout much of the year.
Follow us through the screened door and down the unique black iron spiral staircase to the covered porch below. This staircase provides access to the second-story screened porch from outdoors and quick access to the pool from upstairs.
At ground level, the covered porch provides much-needed shade for optimal outdoor living. This open porch also features boxed columns, a stacked stone fireplace, and a mantel similar to those in the screened porch above. The painted beams on the underside of the covered porch give it an open-rafter feel, too. We added an elegant touch at this level by installing a pair of French doors with sidelights in place of the original windows. These French doors provide access to the home from the lower-level porch.
Outside the porch, we also want to point out the PVC gate from our PorchCo store. We installed the new gate in the clients’ existing wood fence.
