These clients had a basic brick foundation patio and canopy on the back of their home. Nice that it was shaded, yes, but the space was entirely too small to be enjoyable or useful as a porch. The homeowners had bigger ideas, and they enlisted The Porch Company to work our magic with a beautiful screened porch design.
To begin, we extended the porch foundation farther out into the back yard and added a hip roof. The exterior of the new outdoor room is punctuated by the chimney for a wood-burning fireplace. Stairs leading from the porch to the yard feature PVC railings with round aluminum pickets. We used our PorchCo Hermitage sleeves on these railing posts for a look that is solid and stately.
Conveniently, there is a stack of wood beside the staircase outdoors, chopped and ready for use in the new fireplace inside! The solid board skirting along the base of the porch neatly hides a storage area underneath. This is outdoor storage space our clients didn’t have before.
Approaching the screen door, notice how we integrated the railing pattern within the door, using the same round pickets. This is a Sapele wood door, one of our custom-made screen doors. This wood looks beautiful simply stained, and it is quite durable and built to last.
The interior of this screened porch features one of our beautifully rustic, open-rafter ceilings. We installed lighting in the rafters for the perfect ambiance after dark. Meanwhile, day or night, this porch is large enough for two ceiling fans, perfect for stirring up breezes on demand.
Amenities our clients requested for this porch included the wood-burning fireplace as well as an outdoor kitchen. Question: How can you tell when a screened porch is large enough? Answer: When you can tuck an outdoor kitchen into a back corner of the porch, and it doesn’t even dominate the space! Notice there is also plenty of room nearby for a dining table and chairs.
This kitchen area features a large grill, Big Green Egg smoker, glass-door refrigerator and storage compartments – plus a countertop workspace for food prep. The Porch Company installed vents to capture and remove most of the smoke and odors from cooking. We always tell clients, however, that vents will not capture it ALL.
We fashioned the wood-burning fireplace with a stone surround and one of our hollow mantels to hide the cords for our clients’ electronics. Everyone loves these mantels, which are so practical and beautiful at the same time. And don’t you love the lanterns on either side? We positioned lanterns around the room, but these flanking the fireplace somehow lend a special charm to the room.
Finally, we want to be sure you notice this wonderful porch floor made of Thermory Ash flooring. It’s natural wood that has been thermally modified to remove all of the sugars, which are the cause of decay in standard wood used outdoors. The baking process turns the wood’s hue a rich, warm brown while increasing the wood’s durability and making it resistant to moisture. Those characteristics make it especially suitable for outdoor use. We have featured this flooring in a few of our porches.
