Sliding porch doors by Nashville’s Porch Company

At The Porch Company, one of our favorite things to do is to create unique solutions to solve problems or overcome functional or design challenges. Our sliding doors are a great example. Back in 2007, a Porch Company client shared that they wanted a door to create an enclosed storage area under their deck but they didn’t want the door to swing out and prevent the space from accommodating landscaping. Thus began the evolution of the creative, functional and problem-solving Porch Company sliding porch doors.

Movable Shutters

Soon after, another client presented a need for a unique solution. He wanted to be able to block sun on just a portion of one side of his porch. But, the kicker is that portion of the wall was a moving target depending on sun and time of day. So, we designed and built movable shutters giving him the flexibility to control the amount of sun entering different areas of his porch at different times throughout the day. The solution is not only functional and unique but also very aesthetically pleasing.

Take a look at the exterior view below. The shutters are set on movable tracks giving the homeowner flexibility and control of the sun entering his open porch.

Moving Half Wall

With this porch, having a traditional porch door would have encroached on the living space within the porch. The sliding door allows the clients to really open up the space to gain ease of entry to the space but also to provide a nice wide opening to allow even more fresh air to circulate.

Sliding Pocket Door

Because the proximity of the door to the nearby protruding bay window, having a wide sliding door provides nice ease of entry to and from the porch. In addition, having this sliding door on a track solved another problem. As you can see, the door is quite wide. Normally such a wide door would cause stress on the hinges because of the door’s size and weight. Having this door on a track alleviates that potential problem.

Take a look at the two sliding doors below. Many of our customers want to access their grill from their screened porch. But, this presents a problem. Because of the smoke, the grill cannot be used on the screened porch. We came up with a solution to attach a grill deck to the porch and create unique access to it though one of our sliding doors. Voila! You can cook on the grill while being under the cover of the porch. Done cooking? Just close the sliding door and enjoy your grilled food.

Below is another example of a sliding door between one of our screened porches and the attached grill deck.

At The Porch Company, we don’t look at obstacles as roadblocks. As with our sliding doors, we use challenges as opportunities for innovation. We don’t look for the easiest solution but rather the best solution that solves the problem, accomplishes the task, and looks darn good to boot.

There are a couple things to keep in mind with sliding doors. A sliding door can be latchable but not lockable. It won’t blow open but if you’re worried about security, there isn’t a good way to lock it up. In addition, when we’re creating a sliding door, we need to ensure that the door is slightly elevated to ensure that as it slides, it doesn’t touch the wood. This additional space might provide just enough room to allow some bugs to get in.

The bottom line is The Porch Company is going to create the best solution for your custom screened porch and porch components such as our porch swing beds which we now sell at our online store. For us, it’s not about using a cookie cutter. It’s truly about thinking innovatively to create the best space for our customers that fits the bill functionally and aesthetically.
