Don’t you just love the way this sweet screened porch turned out? It’s a recent project from Green Hills screened porch builder, The Porch Company. Let me jump right in and tell you why I like this screened porch so much. The ceiling … the brackets … the floor … the bench … the bed swing. Yes! It really is a bed swing, one of our innovative inventions, and it’s available in our PorchCo store.
The ceiling: When you add a porch to a home with second-story windows, options for the porch roof style may be limited. In this case, we opted for a flat roof. Lest you think that means a low ceiling, that is not the case. We designed a beamed ceiling to extend the ceiling height and give the porch an open and airy feel. Typically, this type of ceiling design yields about 8-12 inches additional height for the room.
The floor: This is our traditional cypress wood floor that we use in so many of our porch projects. It looks just right in this Green Hills TN screened porch. We love the rich, timeless feel of a cypress floor.
The brackets: These decorative elements are reminiscent of arches. Each wooden bracket at the top of a screen panel appears to be half of an arch. We incorporated the bracket design into the screened porch to harmonize with the existing gazebo nearby. If you look through the screen doors and across the flagstone patio, you can see the gazebo with arch brackets. Carrying the arch bracket design over from the gazebo keeps the porch from looking like it was “added on.” It seems original to the home.
The bench: It’s a simple built-in bench, really, just pressure-treated pine and stained to match the beautiful cypress wood floors. What makes it notable here is the length of it. It completes the room by extending fully from wall to wall, from one end of the porch to the other. The bench actually seems to make the room longer.
The bed swing: If you haven’t seen a PorchCo bed swing before, please be sure to examine its design. The one pictured here is our Craftsman style bed swing in pine. Does it make you want to lie down and take a nap … right now? The Porch Company developed the bed swing in our workshop, and these are among the most popular items in our PorchCo store. It can be used as a couch or a bed. Suspended from the ceiling, it really does swing with a rocking motion that will soothe what ails you.
In these photos, we show the bed swing in each of its two comfy positions. The upright position is best for sitting. The gradual incline position gives the bed swing the feel of a couch or sofa. Adding a pillow or two in the gradual incline position makes it great for lounging and napping — hence, why we call it a bed swing!
You can see how the design elements in this screened porch work together to make it a place where the homeowners will enjoy spending time. For those chilly Green Hills TN nights, we installed our favorite heaters, the Solaira infrared heaters. We use these heaters in so many of our custom screened porch designs because of how effective they are. It’s impossible to keep the air warm on a screened porch because cold air comes in continuously. An infrared heater warms whatever objects the infrared rays touch when they radiate out into the room.
