These Nashville homeowners knew they wanted two ways to enjoy the outdoors at home. For days with insects, hot sun or rain, they wanted the protection of a screened porch. For days when conditions are perfect for relaxing in an open, unprotected space, they wanted a paver patio. The Porch Company is the Nashville screened porch builder that brought their vision to life. We designed and built a screened porch and an adjoining backyard paver patio that is a visual delight. Now, outdoor enjoyment is only a step away, rain or shine!
The new screened porch features a simple hip roof, which is our classic Porch Company roof. We use this roof design often for our custom porches because a hip roof is the most sheltering roof style for a porch. With gutters on all sides, a porch protected by a hip roof receives less impact from rain. You can see in this exterior photo that we tied the gutters into the home’s existing gutter line. This tie-in is one of our signature details to ensure a new porch looks original to a client’s home.
We designed the screened porch with a side door leading out to the new patio. The door is one of our custom Porch Company screen doors made with Sapele wood, known for its durability. For the landing and steps down from porch to patio, we used low-maintenance, long-lasting AZEK flooring. The porch steps feature a black Fortress iron railing, which is less obtrusive than many other types of railings. This aspect was important because the railing meets the house right in front of a window. The Fortress railing does not affect the view from inside as much as another type of rail would.
Also on the porch exterior, notice the low beadboard wall in white. If the porch floor were 30” or more from the ground, building code would require a higher knee wall or railing around the porch. With the floor of this porch only 24” from the ground, we were able to design it with a low wall, leaving more room for screens. When we get inside, you’ll see the wonderful effect of these large screened openings. We wanted to give as much area as possible to the screens for a big, wide-open, outdoorsy feeling.
Below the white beadboard wall, we created pressure-treated wood skirting to conceal the underside of the porch. To allow for proper ventilation, we always make sure there is a slight gap between boards in our porch skirting.
The homeowners wanted an ample-sized patio as a companion to their screened porch. They have room on the patio to add a table and more chairs when they want to entertain outside. Plenty of room to stretch out! We designed this patio with Belgard pavers. This collection features a playful mix of colors including a red-brick shade that calls to the home’s traditional brick exterior.
Finally, let’s look around inside the screened porch. Here you see the low, white beadboard wall again, but from the inside. The screened openings are so large you hardly even notice this low wall from inside. It feels more like floor-to-ceiling windows, and the effect is stunning.
The screened porch interior features a two-tone, open-rafter ceiling, a style that is popular with homeowners. When choosing their custom porch details, our clients choose this color combination about 50% of the time. The darker rafters against the lighter ceiling add a feeling of height to the room.
For the porch floor, we used our favorite Cypress tongue-and-groove flooring. We use this flooring in most of our screened porches.
A prominent feature in this pleasant outdoor room is the clients’ Porch Company bed swing. Do you feel an afternoon nap coming on? The homeowners chose neutral colors for their bed swing to complement the brown and white tones throughout the porch. Our bed swings are available through the PorchCo store, in several designs. Our customers confirm that these bed swings provide the ultimate porch relaxation experience, something we ourselves have also found to be true!
