Glorious Gates! They can the focal point, the pizazz, the garden folly that brings a smile or sense of peace or intrigue to the view’s mind. Or they can be bland, hanging limply on rusted hinges asking only for sympathy! Which do you want for your home?
How many gates have I seen begging to be taken out of their misery? How many fences or courtyards or privacy walls have implored their owners for a fresh gate that really shows off their personality?
We can do that for you! The problem is the traditional wooden gate. Asking wood to behave when you put it in an environment that is cruel to its needs is just not fair. If you want that gate to stay looking and performing well, you must care for it regularly. And even then, it has a limited life.
Deck owners have realized that wooden floored decks are not such a great idea and have stepped up to the world of PVC or composite decking. This material can withstand the rain and sun that is so damaging to wood. Now it is time for gate owners to do the same. We’ve learned that gates made of PVC can look just like wood but not require the maintenance. They stay straight on their hinges, proud like a guard at Buckingham Palace, always ready to perform their duties.

We’ve been experimenting with PVC gates for years now and we are so impressed with how well they perform as well as how much design flexibility we have with them. We have a line of gates on our website, but will also custom build for you.

The Porch Company’s lines contain both large gates and small gates and they come in 1-inch, 1.5-inch and 2-inch thicknesses
- A 1-inch gate (1-ply) is a flat panel gate that looks just like our railing panels with interesting designs. You can add attractive hinges and hardware and add pizazz with a custom color.
- The 1.5-inch gate (2-ply) has an applied layer on one side that gives a feeling of dimension. The back side will be scored to give it the look of a wooden gate.
- The 2-inch gate (3-ply), has the applied layer on both sides. If we rate these 3 types of gates good, better and best, this is THE BEST! Once painted, you will assume these are wooden gates except, they always look freshly made!
The Porch Store’s PVC gates come primed or painted. PVC holds paint much better than wood. It will last for years. Previously, using dark-colored paints on PVC would cause the gate to warp or twist because of the heat exchange common to dark colors, but this is not the case any longer. The Porch Company uses a product called AquaSurTech which means even gates in dark colors will not warp – even black. AquaSurTech also offers a wood-grain product to use if you want your gate to mimic the look and grain of stained wood. These paints are not cheap but are worth the cost if a dark or wood-grained gate is what you have in mind.
Why would someone choose a wooden gate over the benefits of a PVC gate like those made exclusively at the Porch Company?
