When it comes to customizing a Porch Company porch, it behooves you to think big. If you can dream it, we can build it. This Forest Hills TN screened porch is one such porch. Stylish and refined, this cottage-style porch is the stuff that southern living Pinterest boards are made of.
Even down to the smallest design elements, The Porch Company strives to make them shine. This custom circle-sawn mantel is evidence of these small finishing touches. The circle saw finish creates a distinct saw pattern on this beautiful mantel that transforms a standard wood plank into a rough-hewn conversation piece. This mantel is not just a pretty face, however. Electrical wiring for the TV and soundbar is tucked away inside the mantel for a perfectly clean aesthetic.
In full view, this wood-burning porch fireplace is a vision of rustic charm. The earthen tones and random shapes and textures of the manufactured stacked stone are so lifelike, you would have a difficult time convincing porch-goers that it’s not natural stone. For this fireplace, and others like it, we do not typically create a raised hearth. Keeping the hearth low helps us keep the TV at a more comfortable viewing level. This fireplace is built into the porch, and goes all the way to the ceiling, over the header. Therefore you will notice we terminated the rafters inside the face of the fireplace. We thoughtfully stained the rafters to mimic the dusky hues of the stone to create a cohesive design aesthetic between the stone and the wood.
This screened porch boasts one of our Porch Company custom swing beds, which is attached to the roof structure between the outdoor living room and dining areas. The beam overhead denotes the transition from the flat roof over the dining area to the hip roof over the living area.
From the rear exterior of the porch, you can also see the distinct rooflines over each outdoor living space. To the left, we have the flat roof over the dining space, and to the right, you will see the hip roof over the living room area. Notice the dual entryways on this side of the porch. This family hosts parties at their home and having two points of entry from outside the porch helps with traffic flow for busy get-togethers. Each door leads to a common deck area with two different sets of stairs leading to the patio and walkway, also provided by The Porch Company.
From this angle, you will notice the third point of entry from the yard into this beautiful screened porch. This area also boasts a patio space, which these homeowners are conveniently utilizing for firewood storage. You will also notice the white beadboard knee wall with aluminum railing on top. These homeowners loved the idea of employing beadboard walls to make the porch feel more like an interior space. Due to the height of the porch, we added the low-profile railing atop the knee wall to achieve the required 36” wall/railing height.
These doors, though! These Sapele mahogany flat panel doors are stunning on this southern porch. We achieved the natural wood color by applying a clear oil stain.
Here you will notice the cumulative cottage design aesthetic in the living room space. The floor was created with 5/4 pressure-treated decking – beautiful in its simplicity, in our custom dark pecan stain. The white painted roof sheathing plays in beautiful contrast with the stained porch rafters. These homeowners added unique and useful sconce lighting on the porch header, which will give an ambient glow, much softer than overhead lighting. To further the comfort of the space, we added radiant heat on the ceiling, as well as a ceiling fan, which will work to cool the space in the summer or circulate warm air in cooler seasons. This is truly a designer space.
Take a look at this view of the porch from the living area to the dining area. The black and brown color palette of the porch swing bed stands out among the light walls of the dining area. Notice that even with the rich, earthen tones throughout this porch, there is still a feeling of light airiness. This is accomplished with wide screened openings, light ceilings, and light walls. The dining space was smartly oriented right outside the home’s kitchen. This will allow for easy travel with food from inside to the outdoor dining room. For outdoor cooking, the grill area is also right outside the screened porch doors from the dining space.
This image shows an opposite view of the porch, from the dining space to the living area. Notice the pops of auburn wood finishes given to the whole space with the table, doors, and fireplace mantel. These designer elements introduce vibrance and warmth into the dusky color palette. One important element of the overall porch design was understanding how the homeowners intended to furnish the space. By discussing the amount of furnishing and the intended layout, The Porch Company was able to design a porch that thoughtfully-accommodated those requirements. Another fantastically-usable element of this porch is that the family can open every interior door, creating a whole interior/exterior space for entertaining.
