These Brentwood, TN, homeowners had a beautiful home with an elevated deck overlooking their pool, but they wanted to add the missing ingredient. What they needed was a protected outdoor space. They envisioned a screened outdoor room where they could enjoy fresh air without the nuisance of pesky insects. With a screened porch as elegant as any living room, perfect for entertaining, their home would be complete. The Porch Company was happy to bring that vision to life for them.
The family had been using the underdeck area as a covered porch, so the new project retains that aspect. The homeowners enjoy having a covered area near the pool. We simply transformed the space from a deck and covered area into a hip roof screened porch and covered porch combination.
Looking at this home before we replaced the deck with a screened porch, you might not think a screened porch would make that much difference. As you can see here, it does! From the outside, this elevated porch is so much grander than the deck it replaced. Our clients didn’t lose anything in the transformation. They can still look out into the treetops, watch swimmers in the pool below, and relax in comfort and peace. What they gained was an additional room to enjoy, one in which they will spend so much more time than they spent on the deck.
From the inside, the contrast between this elegant screened room and the original deck is stunning. The porch we designed and built here is a room you wouldn’t want to leave until you absolutely had to. Of course, the homeowners’ lovely décor contributes plenty to the appeal of this outdoor room as well.
One of our favorite interior features of this screened porch is the beautiful open-rafter ceiling. The height of the ceiling contributes to the open and airy feel of this room, as do the smaller transom-style screened openings topping the “walls.” The porch is large enough for two ceiling fans, and we installed lighting for nighttime use – including subtle fixtures in the rafters for ambiance.
Another design standout here is the brick wall at the back of the screened porch, previously the home’s exterior wall. It lends a certain amount of charm to the room, matched only by the charm of the new outdoor fireplace. We used a PorchCo Hand Hewn mantel for this ventless gas fireplace and faux stone for the fireplace surround.
Because an outdoor fireplace is intended for ambiance and not heat, this porch includes four of our favorite Solaira infrared heaters. These amazing heaters will keep everyone warm and toasty in the cooler months, extending the use of the screened porch.
We built the porch floor with AZEK/TimberTech tongue-and-groove porch flooring. This product is extremely durable, so the homeowners will never have to worry about scratches or stains on this floor. Along the lower portion of the screened walls you may recognize our distinctive PorchCo Southern Cross panels.
We continued our PVC panels along the walkway from the screened porch to the stairs for a harmonious transition from the interior to the exterior. Using these panels for a railing ensures a unified look across the back of the house. On the exterior railing, you may be able to see our custom cap rail that sits above and below the railing panels. For this project, we custom-made these handrails. Therefore, unlike the Timbertech Premier railing, our customers typically use, this product can be painted.
We take great pride in our custom screen doors. Not only do we install them on our porches, but they are one of our signature Porch Store Products that we ship nationwide! We believe both the beauty and craftsmanship are unmatched. The Sapele wood they are made from, often referred to as Sapele Mahogany, is so rich and stunning that many clients, like this one, choose to stain the door to make it an accent piece.
Continuing along the walkway from the screened porch to the stairs, you can see the iron staircase railings we added. Every other baluster features a forged iron “knuckle” halfway down, an ornamental touch that adds depth and visual interest to the railing design.
Now you’ve arrived at the second porch in this screened porch and covered porch combination. This open porch on the lower level is every bit as elegant as the screened room above it. At the same time, the covered porch provides a welcome refuge for swimmers (and watchers) seeking much-needed shade. Here the homeowners can relax and enjoy their cushioned outdoor furniture or take time to eat a snack before returning to the pool.
We used AZEK flooring for the understory ceiling on this porch. It’s absolutely lovely and, if any water is ever trapped among the floor boards, it will drain and never create any rotting issues. That’s because AZEK boards are PVC throughout, with no wood particles that could fall prey to rot or insect damage.
In addition to the upper and lower porches, this project includes an outdoor shower, perfect for the poolside setting. Finally, we also installed one of our signature solid PVC gates for these clients and painted it a special color for them.
