There’s no question, a porch is good for what ails you. Around here at The Porch Company, we have a term for this concept: outdoor living therapy. We have two reasons for coining that phrase. One is based on our own experience living the porch lifestyle: laid back, easy going, free, fun and happy! The other is based on feedback we have received from our customers. I want to share a few of their porch stories with you.
Holly mentions the restorative power of music enjoyed on their porch: “We are watching less TV, eating dinner outside and listening to vinyl records on the porch (the acoustics are amazing!). This means we are connecting more and more present with life. We are entertaining friends more too. So, I would say the porch has improved our lives by making us want to connect more and unplug.”
Connie compares her family’s porch time to the ultimate in relaxation—vacation: “Our back porch has been a relaxing place to just hang out as a family. Whether it’s eating on the dining table, or hanging out on sofas watching TV—it has added a space to our home that feels more like being on vacation. The kids like to hang out with their friends and talk on the porch. I really like going outside in the mornings with a cup of coffee and just relaxing—for some reason it’s just easier to do this on a back porch. The quality and workmanship The Porch Company put into our porch are impeccable. I have no regrets over adding this truly livable space to our home.”
David and his family value the connections they make with nature on their porch: “We added our porch over 15 years ago. It is simply understood that, when the weather accommodates, the French doors will be wide open and we will pretty much live on our porch. It is the natural gathering place when friends or family come over…the place to sip coffee in the morning or eat any meal. It is a great thinking place…when thunderstorms roll in it is the ideal place to be an observer and watch. We have spent countless times together or alone watching nature while we think and talk about life…by far the best home investment we ever made.”
Here are Candice’s observations: “About 25 years ago on bright sunny January day, I noticed my aging parents, on my back deck, covered in hats and sunglasses, struggling to read the newspaper outdoors in the fresh air that was a bit breezy. The next month I met Nancy in her booth at the Antiques and Garden Show. Soon my new husband and I had our small wedding reception on a wonderful porch. And both my parents and my in-laws went into their dotage snoozing on that back porch. Another aging relative, visiting us every winter, brought an equally aging fur and dutifully sat on the porch for her essential cigarette until her death.
“Now it is a seasonal ritual in our lives. Each spring we never remove enough of our southern snow, or pollen, from porch surfaces so we get dusty green splotches on ourselves. Every Fourth of July, we host the same 5-6 friends on the porch, regardless of the heat. Each fall, we hope for a rain to enjoy under the dry porch. And at Christmas, of course, our porch hosts our Christmas tree.
“Throughout the year, we keep dressed on the porch a full-sized, fully-dressed lady, Mimi Purdy, to ward off any miscreants. She has always worked well—except, of course, the time a squirrel chewed thru a screen to attack some avocados in a bowl on the porch table. She evidently sat by idly, but the Porch Company came soon and made repairs.”
It’s easy to see why these Nashville-area Porch Company clients love their porches and value their time spent outdoors on a porch. In each case, their investment in a fine porch has made a difference in their lives. Ultimately, a porch is much more than the sum total of the materials that have gone into building it. A porch brings intangibles into your life like relaxation, personal connection and restoration of the soul—and we are all better off for having it.
We would love to bring a life-enhancing porch into your world. If you’re in the Nashville area, call us at 615-663-2886 or come by our design studio. We look forward to doing business with you.
